Eccentric contractionStrength & Power

A muscle producing force while it lengthens — like lowering a weight.

An eccentric contraction is when a muscle produces force while lengthening, such as lowering a dumbbell or the braking phase of landing. Eccentric training can build strength and tendon capacity effectively and is a mainstay of tendinopathy rehab, but it also causes more muscle damage and soreness than other contraction types. It contrasts with concentric (shortening) and isometric (static) contractions.
