RCT

Randomised Controlled TrialResearch Methods & Statistics

A study that randomly assigns people to treatments to test cause and effect.

A Randomised Controlled Trial allocates participants to an intervention or a comparison group by chance, so the groups start out similar and any later difference can be attributed to the treatment. Randomisation, and ideally blinding, reduce bias, which is why well-run RCTs sit high in the evidence hierarchy. Their findings still depend on sample size, adherence and how representative the participants are.
