Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation applies an electrical current through surface electrodes to make a muscle contract involuntarily. It is used in rehabilitation to maintain or rebuild muscle strength when voluntary contraction is limited — for example after knee surgery. Parameters such as pulse width and intensity affect how much force is produced and how comfortable it is.
